Visitation Information

The guesthouse of New Skete contains a lounge and rooms for retreatants. Retreats are private and informal; meals are taken with the monks; guests attend the services and spend time in reading, prayer, and relaxation as well as working with the community. The main meal is taken with the nuns.

Advance reservations are necessary, and stays are limited to two or three days because of the many people who wish to visit.

About the Monastery

New Skete is a religious community of men and women, consisting of three separate facilities for monks, nuns, and married couples. In 1969 a group of Poor Clares found their way to New Skete, searching for a place to call home. They eventually became the Nuns of New Skete, building Our Lady of the Sign Monastery five miles from the monks. In 1979 the New Skete Communities joined the Orthodox Church in America. There are currently 6 nuns in residence.

The nuns paint icons, and bake an assortment of gourmet cheesecakes and fruitcakes under the New Skete Kitchens label. In addition, they assist the monks in raising German Shepherd dogs.
